George Ballantine & Son, Limited, of Scotland, was originally established in 1827. "Fully matured" and "quality guaranteed," its blends are sought after by connoisseurs for their soft yet complex nature, the ingenious result of hints of Islay and Highland dryness rounded out with the Bourbon aging process. The ballantine's brand was known principally in Continental Europe until the firm was acquired in 1936 by Hiram Walker. Although production ceased during World War II, the company's export trade expanded rapidly in the '50s and it acquired companies to hold stocks of maturing whiskeys and three Highland malt distilleries in Glencadam, Scapa and Pulteney. In fact, the firm received the "Queen's Award for Export Achievement" in 1968.
